What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)? How do I know if ABA is the right choice for my family member?

“Applied behavior analysis is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior…” (Cooper, 2007). In other words, ABA uses science-based methods to change behavior. A parent once referred to it as “a therapy for behavior”. An ABA program should be uniquely tailored to address each individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

Common goals may include:  communication training, increasing compliance, toilet training, encouraging independence with daily living skills (i.e. chores, meal preparation, and hygiene), or eliminating/reducing challenging behaviors such as self-injury, aggression, or property destruction. Because behavior is directly influenced by the behavior of others as well as the environment, treatment should not stop once a therapy session is over. Instead, family, friends, and staff are guided and strongly encouraged to participate in treatment. This teamwork approach ensures that families are provided with the tools they need to give their special needs family members the brightest future possible.
